European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the European Union will react firmly if U.S. President Donald Trump decides to impose unfair or arbitrary tariffs on European products. Von der Leyen expressed this stance during a press conference in Gdansk, Poland, where she met with the Polish government holding the rotating presidency of the EU Council.
Should Trump take any measures in this regard, Von der Leyen advocated for analyzing the situations at stake to find common solutions. The community leader highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong transatlantic relationship due to the strong economic ties between both parties. She pointed out that trade between Brussels and Washington reaches 1.5 trillion euros, generating numerous jobs in both regions.
Von der Leyen emphasized that the current trade relationship benefits people and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic, given the high level of interconnectedness between the two largest economies in the world. The European Commission President expressed the importance of maintaining joint work between European and American companies to avoid negative consequences such as rising product prices, harm to workers, and economic disruptions.
